An attacker can compromise the system of a contractor company, to steal, modify or damage resources. A scientific or another connected company/research institution can be compromised for the same objective. Connected networks or data exchanges can be leveraged to propagate the attack.
This type of attack technique cannot be easily mitigated with preventive controls since it is based on the abuse of system features.
